Đorđe Vajfert, portrayed on the 20 dinars of 2010, led the very bank that issued this coin for more than a quarter of a century: he was governor of the National Bank in 1890–1902 and 1912–1926, and then its honorary governor until his death.
Born in Pančevo in 1850, Vajfert was among the founders of the bank in 1884 and sat on its first board. An industrialist and brewer, he expanded beer production in Belgrade, and in 1903 he discovered copper ore at Bor. During the First World War the bank operated in exile in Marseille and, under his leadership, kept the dinar exchange rate stable; after the war Vajfert organised the unification of the currency and the absorption of the branches of the former Austro-Hungarian bank. His portrait also appears on the Serbian 1000 dinar banknote.
The coin marked the 160th anniversary of Vajfert’s birth. The portrait side carries his dates «1850-1937», the name «ЂОРЂЕ ВАЈФЕРТ», the numeral 20 and the word «ДИНАРА-DINARA»; the other side bears the great coat of arms of the Republic of Serbia, the legends «РЕПУБЛИКА СРБИЈА» and «REPUBLIKA SRBIJA» and the initials «НБС-NBS».
This is the fourth coin in the run of 20-dinar pieces with portraits of eminent Serbs (KM# 61) and a natural partner for the banknote featuring the same man, a pairing that speaks clearly in a collection on the history of Serbian money. UNC condition: the coin never circulated, shows no wear and keeps its mint lustre.
